Mill Centre Cemetery Association
Established 1878
Nearly 150 Years of Memories, History and Legacy
Thank you to the families who gathered in November, 1878 at the Pittsfield Post Office to certify the formation of an association for the purpose of procuring and holding lands to be used exclusively for a cemetery to be called the Mill Centre Cemetery Association. The eight men, to include; Luther Willson, N. L. Colson, Clark Ames, L. D. Colson, L. W. Dunham, Peter Wedemon, James Potter, and Andrew Brown established a non-denominational cemetery located at the corner of now Glendale Ave and Sunnybrook Drive.
The nearby Town of Pittsfield was organized in 1852. The area provided lumbering opportunities for early settlers due to the dense forests of pine and hemlock. At one time 10 sawmills were operating in the area, which became appropriately called Mills Centre! Many of our personal family histories intersect with the history of the Mill Centre Cemetery Association.
Today the volunteers of the Mill Centre Cemetery Association work to maintain the cemetery grounds in honor of past, present and future generations. Several families generously volunteer at the annual spring clean-up. In addition, annual financial donations are welcomed to help ensure the future of the cemetery. The cemetery relies solely on volunteers, donations and plot sales for lawncare maintenance and perpetual care.
